Day 4(April 22): Brawley,CA to Palo Verde,CA–70 miles through the Sonoran Desert

We made it! We started in the Imperial Valley, crossed the Algodones Dunes Wilderness Area, skirted the Chocolate Mountains and are now in a lush, green valley fed by the Colorado River.
The only shop open in the tiny town of Palo Verde is the gas station/mart and that closes at 5 pm. The other establishments are seasonal and closed in the end of March.
Now for the day’s ride: a roller coaster two lane road without shoulders which we shared with semis and huge RVs towing sand buggies or boats. Add to that the heat and only one dune buggy watering hole reminiscent of the Mad Max movie, for the complete distance and you get an idea of our day.
We are now in a permanent RV park; most of the RVs look like they have not moved in the the last 30 years. The few inhabitants we see seem to match their dwellings.
The camping is, however, free. We are under the shade of tamarisk trees sitting in a swing beside the Palo Verde Lagoon enjoying a pleasant breeze. Dinner was peanut butter sandwiches. I enjoyed a shower; Joe is still negotiating with himself on that task.
After downing 40 ounces of water each after completing the ride, we are both feeling good.
We are 4 days and 205 miles out of San Diego.  Tomorrow will take us into Arizona– a milestone for us.
Until then…
